A single balloon enteroscopy is a procedure in which a small flexible tube is passed through the mouth (or the anus) and guided through the deepest parts of the small intestine that are unable to be reached by standard upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. This procedure is longer than a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. The endoscopist can evaluate the internal lining of the small bowel and look for abnormalities including polyps, masses, or sites of bleeding. If a polyp or lesion is found, the physician can remove the lesion for tissue samples or control the source of bleeding.
