About me

Alexis Anne Dieter, MD, is a board-certified urogynecologist in the National Center for Advanced Pelvic Surgery (NCAPS) at MedStar Health and Director of Research for the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. Previously, Dr. Dieter served as Director of Research and Assistant Professor for the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Dieter works with women of all different ages to diagnose, manage, and treat pelvic floor disorders, including urinary incontinence, bowel control disorders, pelvic organ prolapse, and childbirth injuries. She uses both medical and surgical treatments, including medication, physical therapy, neuromodulation, and minimally invasive surgical techniques, to improve the quality of life for her patients. Dr. Dieter offers a wide variety of treatment options that cater to the needs and lifestyle of her patients. Treatment decisions are guided by collaboration between Dr. Dieter and her patients--what their goals are in terms of what they’re hoping to accomplish and what they’re interested in using. She is an expert surgeon and is specialty trained in minimally invasive robotic surgery using the da Vinci® robotic surgery system. Robotic surgery, compared to traditional open surgical techniques, reduces pain, reduces recovery time, and typically allows patients to go home the same day.

Her clinical interests include treating and improving the quality of life for patients with prolapse (vaginal bulge), bladder issues, working with women post-childbirth, and working with her patients to find the most efficient treatment to help reduce recovery time while providing excellent results in-line with their treatment goals. She is passionate about closing the gaps in health disparities and expanding access to care to ensure that everyone receives the care they need and achieves excellent outcomes.

Dedicated to advancing continuing education and expanding translational research in the field of urogynecology, Dr. Dieter has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has given dozens of national and international presentations. She is also a peer-reviewer for many publications including Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, The International Urogynecology Journal, The American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, The Journal of Urology and The American Journal of Surgery. Her current research interests include studying the bladder microbiome and how changes in this ecosystem contribute to the development of bladder disorders as well as looking at surgical outcomes and how the operative process can be more efficient.

“One of the things that really drives me in research is staying at the forefront of new advances and driving the advancement of the field of urogynecology. I think our practice here at MedStar Health is really good at being up-to-date in using the evidence that gives people the best treatment options in their different conditions.”

Dr. Dieter received her undergraduate degree from MIT and her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She then completed an internship in Obstetrics & Gynecology at New York University, before joining Duke University Medical Center for residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology and a 3-year subspecialty fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery. She is a member of the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA), the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), and a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Philosophy of Care

“I approach my practice as a team effort. At MedStar Health and NCAPS, we have a dedicated team of administrative staff, nurses, trainees, and providers working together to bring the highest level of care to each patient. I partner with this team to provide tailored treatments that meet the specific needs of my patients.

“In my practice, most of my patients come to me with health issues that can be uncomfortable to talk about, but that affect their quality of life in a major way. It’s important to me that my patients feel comfortable and safe expressing their concerns and discussing their goals for care. With open communication, we are able to work together to create a treatment plan that will give my patients excellent results and improve their quality of life.”

Dr. Dieter was not at all rushed, she listened and answered all of my questions. There was also a very good medical student.

Dr. Alexis Dieter is the best GYN doctor I have ever had. And at age 79 with my husband being in the military and being retired for 20 years - I've seen a few. Dr. Alexis is by far the most compassionate and caring.
