Michelle “Shelley” Lundegard, MSHS, BSN, HACP, serves as the Vice President of Operations at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. Shelley is known for her deep clinical knowledge, strong operational insight, and proven track record in advancing quality and safety. Over many years, she has built a reputation as a trusted and influential leader within MedStar Health through impactful leadership roles.
Shelley began her career at MedStar Southern Maryland in 1996 as a bedside nurse in the ICU. Over the years, she transitioned into progressive leadership roles in quality and patient safety, where she partnered with physicians and nursing leaders to advance care and improve outcomes. She has also served as Director of Quality, Safety, and Health Information Management (HIM) at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, leading the organization through successful clinical certifications and system-level quality initiatives.
Before assuming her current role, Shelley returned to MedStar Southern Maryland as Senior Director of Quality, Safety, and HIM, where she led transformational improvements in patient safety, regulatory readiness, and infection prevention. Her leadership is marked by strong attention to detail, strategic thinking, and the ability to quickly mobilize teams to address operational challenges.
Now, as Vice President of Operations, Shelley draws on her deep clinical background and systems knowledge to help integrate hospital functions, streamline processes, and support high-quality, patient-centered care. She holds a master’s degree in Health Sciences from George Washington University, is certified in Lean Six Sigma, and is a Healthcare Accreditation Certified Professional. Shelley has been an active member of the MedStar System Regulatory and Quality Leaders Council, contributing her expertise in quality and regulatory readiness at the system level. She is recognized for her collaborative, data-informed, and results-driven leadership.
