Georgetown University and MedStar Health formed its academic health system partnership in 2000. The institutions’ leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding and strengthening the academic health system partnership with a new agreement in 2017 stretching a half century.

Our partner: Georgetown University Medical Center
As a top academic health and science center, Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) provides, in a synergistic fashion, excellence in education — training physicians, nurses, health administrators and other health professionals, as well as biomedical scientists — and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research collaboration, enhancing our basic science and translational biomedical research capacity in order to improve human health. Patient care, clinical research and education is conducted with our academic health system partner, MedStar Health. GUMC’s mission is carried out with a strong emphasis on social justice and a dedication to the Catholic, Jesuit principle of cura personalis -- or “care of the whole person.”

Together, MedStar Health and Georgetown University provide a continuum of learning from medical school through clinical practice and elevate our programs to benefit medical students, residents, fellows, clinical faculty, and our patients. We train 1,100 medical residents annually and offer advanced education in nearly 100 specialty and subspecialty programs. Our post-graduate medical education programs prepare physicians to transform health and wellness delivery through compassionate patient care, groundbreaking scientific research, and solution-based medical innovations.

The School of Nursing at Georgetown University builds on a 120-year tradition of excellence in nursing education at the professional, advanced practice, and doctoral levels. Clinical trials and research
MedStar Health and Georgetown University's researcher teams work collaboratively to translate basic laboratory discoveries into clinical research with the goal of improving patient care. Our physician scientists and investigators launch national clinical trials, initiate novel studies and conduct population research primarily focused on reducing health disparities. Our goal is to conduct applied research and implementation science, grounded in evidence, to advance safety, efficiency, and quality for our clinicians and patients.

The Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS) is a multi-institutional consortium of medical research institutions forged from a desire to promote clinical research and translational science. Convened through a prestigious NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), GHUCCTS offers resources and support for investigators including training programs, biostatistical services, workshops and seminars including a monthly Research Grand Rounds, career development services, and more.
MedStar-Georgetown Collaborative Center for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Research and Education (AI CoLab)
The AI CoLab is a joint initiative between MedStar Health and Georgetown University to create, advance, and lead artificial intelligence research and education. Perinatal Legal Advocacy and Well-being (LAW)

Cancer Legal Assistance & Well-being (LAW) Project
The Cancer LAW Project (launched in 2019) addresses cancer patients’ unmet legal needs that negatively affect their physical and mental health and interfere with or prevent effective pursuit of cancer treatment.
