About me
Glenn W. Wortmann, MD, FIDSA, FACP is the Section Director of Infectious Diseases at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and the Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the MedStar Institute of Quality and Safety. He maintains academic appointments at Georgetown University Hospital as a Professor of Clinical Medicine and at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Wortmann performed his undergraduate training at Princeton University on a ROTC scholarship, and then received a military deferment to attend medical school and complete an internship in Internal Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. He was then called onto active-duty status and assigned to Katterbach, Germany where he served for 3 years as a general medical officer.
He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and then served as an internist at Ft Eustis, Virginia for one year. He then returned to Walter Reed to complete a 3-year fellowship in Infectious Diseases.
He remained at Walter Reed for the next 14 years, serving in a variety of positions, to include Section Director of Infectious Diseases and Program Director of the National Capital Consortium Infectious Diseases fellowship. His research interests during this period included leishmaniasis, Acinetobacter infections and infections related to war-trauma.
Dr. Wortmann retired from active-duty status in 2012 and transitioned to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he served as the Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship from 2012-2017 and continues as the Section Director of Infectious Diseases.
In 2017, he assumed an additional role as the Director of Infection Prevention for the MedStar Institute of Quality and Safety. Dr. Wortmann’s research interest now focuses on healthcare-associated infections. He remains committed to medical education and patient-care, and provides continuity care for patients infected with HIV, as well as Infectious Disease consultations in both the inpatient and outpatient areas.
