About the Provider

Glenn W. Wortmann, MD, is section director of infectious diseases at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and program director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. Dr. Wortmann is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine and professor of clinical medicine (infectious diseases) at Georgetown University. He recently retired from a 23-year career with the U.S. Army, where he earned many commendations and served as chief of Infectious Diseases Service at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and program director of the National Capital Consortium Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program.

Dr. Wortmann was drawn to the field of infectious diseases because he wants to care for people, and he enjoys the combination of science and patient care. He finds his work extremely rewarding and has a high positive impact on his patients' health, as most diseases he treats are reversible or controllable. Dr. Wortmann says that the biggest challenges to treating patients are barriers to care caused by poverty and the complications faced by patients with multiple medical problems.
As section director and training program director, Dr. Wortmann's goals are to provide outstanding care to patients, to train future infectious disease physicians, and to pursue research that improves patient outcomes. Dr. Wortmann evaluates and treats a wide variety of infectious diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis, hospital-acquired infections, and tropical diseases. He also sees patients for pre-international travel consultation, including providing pre-travel vaccinations and prescribing preventative medications against malaria.
