CONVERGE

Our bold vision for the future of innovation, simulation, and discovery

Health care is evolving rapidly. Advances in technology, data, and care delivery are reshaping how clinicians learn, how teams work together, and how bold ideas move from concept into practice.

To meet this moment, MedStar Health and Georgetown University are developing CONVERGE, an Innovation, Simulation, and Discovery Center, to prepare the next generation of professionals and accelerate progress across the broader health system and academic environment.

Located on Georgetown University’s Hilltop Campus in the Reiss Science Building, the planned 18,500-square-foot facility will bring together an estimated 18,000 learners, clinicians, researchers, and innovators annually in an environment built for hands-on training, experimentation, and applied problem solving.

The center builds on the longstanding partnership between MedStar Health and Georgetown University and our shared commitment to advancing education, research, and patient care.

Creating spaces that power discovery across MedStar Health and Georgetown University—and far beyond hospital walls.

At CONVERGE, learners at every stage—from first-year undergraduate students to experienced clinicians—will train side by side in realistic care settings. Fully equipped operating rooms, emergency department bays, intensive care and recovery spaces, and patient rooms will support practice in both routine and high-stakes scenarios. These immersive environments are designed to strengthen technical skills, clinical judgment, teamwork, and confidence.

The center will also provide a place to redesign workflows, test new approaches to care delivery, and evaluate care models before they are introduced more broadly across the health system. CONVERGE will serve as both a proving ground and a catalyst, helping teams move faster from concept to implementation.

With spaces equipped for large-scale data visualization, artificial intelligence (AI) workflow planning, virtual and augmented reality, and prototyping solutions from 3D-printed trainers to living materials, the center will enable faculty, students, and partners to study performance, develop new tools, and address challenges.

Its reach is intended to extend across Georgetown University, MedStar Health, and beyond. Students and faculty from medicine, nursing, psychology, education, business, engineering, computer science, materials science, law, and other disciplines will have opportunities to contribute to research and discovery. Bringing those perspectives together, while welcoming external partner collaboration, will spark new approaches to care, education, and transformation.

“The pace of innovation in health care is rapidly accelerating. CONVERGE will enable our community to be on the leading edge of building, testing, and refining solutions with the world-class entrepreneurs, companies, faculty, and learners it will empower and attract.”

At its core, CONVERGE is about improving lives.

Our vision is rooted in a simple idea: today’s healthcare challenges are too complex for any one profession to solve alone. Stronger communication, better coordination, and more effective systems depend on people learning and working together.

CONVERGE will advance a shared commitment to improving the human condition through knowledge, compassion, and curiosity. By bringing learning, research, and applied problem-solving together, the center will help turn bold ideas into meaningful progress for the communities MedStar Health and Georgetown University serve.

The ultimate goal is better care for patients and families. Every training exercise, prototype, and workflow redesign effort within CONVERGE is intended to strengthen preparedness, improve decision-making, and support safer, higher-quality care.

“Through realistic, high-fidelity scenarios, teams across roles learn together, building trust, shared decision-making, and professional confidence. CONVERGE presents a strategic opportunity to prepare students, clinicians, and transdisciplinary partners to deliver exceptional, evidence-driven care in environments that mirror the complexity, uncertainty, and pace of contemporary health systems. Whether you are a student or a tenured clinician, these experiences translate directly into safer practices, stronger teamwork, improved readiness, and consistently higher-quality patient care in real clinical environments.”

  • Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FADLN, FAAN, Dean and Professor, Berkley School of Nursing, Georgetown University

Here, technology is not just a tool—it’s a teammate.

CONVERGE also creates a meaningful platform to imagine and shape the future of AI in health care and other industries. As AI becomes more integrated into clinical, operational, and educational settings, organizations need environments where clinicians, educators, engineers, and data scientists can test how these tools inform decision-making, perform in practice, and support human expertise.

We are poised to deliver that environment—one where emerging technology can be evaluated thoughtfully, teamwork can be strengthened by new solutions, and innovation can be translated into exceptional, real-world applications.

As MedStar Health and Georgetown University look ahead, CONVERGE stands as an investment in the insights, partnerships, and people who will shape the next era of health care and innovation.
