ECT is a safe and proven treatment for individuals with severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, catatonia, and other conditions where medication and psychotherapy alone have been insufficient. Treatment typically occurs in an inpatient setting, with a standard course of 8 to 12 sessions. The frequency and duration are adjusted based on the patient's clinical response and individualized treatment plan.
While ECT is not generally performed on patients under 18, and certain medical conditions may require additional review, eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis in collaboration with the ECT clinical team.
