The MedStar Health - Georgetown University Hospital Fellowship Program in Body Imaging
The body imaging fellowship is a one-year clinical fellowship designed to provide balanced, in-depth experience in all aspects of body imaging for individuals who have completed formal residency training in diagnostic radiology. Our faculty members have extensive experience in body imaging and are widely published and recognized at local, national, and international levels.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is the only liver and multivisceral transplant center in the Washington, DC region and the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only designated cancer center in the area. These centers, combined with our medical and surgical specialties, provide exposure to transplant (liver, kidney and pancreas), oncologic, and vascular patients, in addition to general emergency, medical, and surgical patients, with a broad range of pathology.
Curriculum
Our fellows rotate through the various modalities in 13 four-week rotations (see below). In addition to more traditional diagnostic cross-sectional body imaging (CT, MR, and ultrasound), they will receive training in advanced CT imaging and reconstruction, and image-guided procedures. Fellows are assigned a weekly procedure day, during which they perform US and CT guided procedures, including fluid aspiration, drainage, and biopsies. When on US, they perform thyroid nodule FNAs, cervical lymph node and superficial mass biopsies, and hysterosonography, under direct supervision of body imaging faculty. The elective block offers significant flexibility and fellows can choose to supplement their training in their choice of field. In the past, our fellows have selected additional training in routine/high-risk OB imaging, mammography, cardiovascular, informatics, musculoskeletal, nuclear medicine, and image-guided interventional procedures.
- Body MRI (4 blocks) – Our MR service has a robust volume of abdominal, pelvic, and vascular studies, with a wide variety of pathology, including hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and renal disease; gastrointestinal disease including IBD, gastric and colorectal cancer; pre/post-transplant imaging of liver, renal, pancreas, and multivisceral transplants; female pelvis imaging of gynecologic and pelvic floor dysfunction; and male pelvis imaging for prostate cancer (diagnosis, active surveillance, post-treatment recurrence).
- CT (4 blocks) – Our CT service is relatively busy with our complex inpatient and outpatient population, including emergency, oncologic, postoperative, and post-transplant patients.
- Advanced CT (1 block) – During this rotation, our fellows are involved in advanced CT imaging, including CT colonoscopy, cardiac CT/MR, CT angiography, and CT/MR volumetry, and gain proficiency with post-processing software.
- US (3 blocks) – On US, there is exposure to complex inpatient and routine outpatient hepatobiliary, gynecologic, transplant, oncologic, and emergent studies. Fellows perform US-guided procedures, including thyroid FNA, lymph-node FNA/core biopsies, superficial soft tissue mass biopsies, and hysterosonography. Our fellows are also involved with intraoperative ultrasound guidance for surgical procedures.
- Elective (1 block) – Flexible rotation during which fellows can choose how to best complement their training before initiating employment.
Equipment
Our imaging equipment is state-of-the-art and includes:
- 3.0T and 1.5T Siemens MR scanners for clinical imaging, including cardiac, prostate, perianal, and dynamic pelvic floor imaging.
- Siemens dual source, 128-slice, and 16-slice CT scanners in addition to a 64-slice PET-CT scanner.
- GE Logicview US machines, with the latest technology including 3D, elastography, B-flow, and contrast enhanced capabilities.
- Post-processing is performed on Tera-recon and DynaCAD workstations, including aortic and peripheral vascular angiography, cardiac CT and MR, CT and MR enterography, CT colonography, and solid-organ volumetry.
Education and Service
Our fellows attend and present at several tumor boards and conferences, including esophageal multidisciplinary board, gastrointestinal tumor board, hepatobiliary conference, IBD conference, prostate conference, endocrine conference, and renal donor conference. They are encouraged to participate in research projects during the academic year, and will be provided protected academic time. This project can be in the area of QA/QI, CT, MR, or US, and is under the guidance of one of the section faculty members. All fellows are expected to give lectures to the radiology residents and to submit interesting case reports while on each CT and MR rotation. There is a dedicated didactic fellow conference series and journal club, and we share interesting cases every morning after the team huddle.
Fellows take calls in weeklong blocks, Monday-Sunday. On-call fellows are on pager call during the week and are in-house on weekends. On-call responsibilities include consulting with the on-call residents as needed, and assisting the attending with after-hours and emergent cases performed on weekends. Our PACS system allows for viewing of studies via VPN, so cases can be viewed from home.
