Mimi Novello, MD, MBA, FACEP, serves as Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.
In this role, Dr. Novello oversees quality, safety and risk management, clinical process improvement, programmatic growth, physician strategic development, Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education at the institutional level, and medical staff relations for the hospital. She also assists as a liaison between Senior Management Team, hospital presidents, board of directors, medical staff officers and members, and department chairs.
Dr. Novello was recently named director of Medical Staff Operations, where she was responsible for enhancing the physician orientation and on-boarding processes, assisting in compliance with physician documentation and medical record policies, supporting the department chairs in their physician performance evaluation processes, as well as other Medical Staff activities.
Dr. Novello will continue in the key position of chief medical information officer, as the physician lead for ICD-10 coding implementation, working with department chairs and other physician leaders in ensuring appropriate and timely documentation and transitioning our focus from the implementation of electronic medical documentation to using these clinical information systems in driving improvements in clinical performance, quality, and safety.
Since 2009, Dr. Novello has been an attending physician in the Emergency Department at MedStar Franklin Square. She will continue to see patients in the Emergency Department.
A member of numerous professional healthcare organizations, she is currently a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American College of Physicians Executives, the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, the National Hispanic Medical Association, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Dr. Novello is also involved in a number of committees, including a member of Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients (CRISP) Clinical Advisory Group, a member of the Maryland State Telemedicine Clinical Advisory Group task force, a member of MedStar corporate informatics governance and workgroup committees, co-chair of MedStar Franklin Square's Informatics Governance Committee, chair of the local pharmacy/ provider/ nursing workgroup, co-chair of the MedStar Franklin Square Meaningful Use Committee, and physician chair of the High Reliability Organization Implementation Program.
