About me

Hosein Kafimosavi, DO, is an attending physician at the MedStar Health Infectious Diseases Department. He is also Program Director for the Ryan White Program-Part A and Community–Base Disease Intervention Services at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

As a board-certified infectious disease physician, Dr. Kafimosavi treats patients with acute and chronic diseases caused by infectious pathogens, including cellulitis, bacteremias, staph infections, bone and joint infections, hepatitis C, pneumonia, and Lyme disease. As a specialist in HIV, he sees patients for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure testing, as well as newly diagnosed HIV and treatment-experienced patients with difficult-to-treat HIV.

Dr. Kafimosavi views formulating a treatment plan as an art. He combines the patient’s clinical history with the results from diagnostic testing and evidence-based clinical guidelines to create the most effective treatment plan.

His clinical interests include general infectious disease, critical care infections, and antimicrobial stewardship. He is also involved in research that looks at women’s health within the HIV population, more specifically looking for ways to assist women with HIV to get better care and improve their overall health.

Dr. Kafimosavi received a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University School of Medicine, before earning a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed a three-year internal medicine residency with Arnot Ogden Medical Center before completing a two-year infectious disease and epidemiology specialty fellowship training program at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Prior to joining MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Dr. Kafimosavi was an attending physician at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the International Antiviral Society – USA chapter.

Dr. Kafimosavi is fluent in Farsi. When not in the clinic, he enjoys traveling, sports, and writing new jokes.

Philosophy of care

“All patients deserve the time, respect, and education necessary for them to learn about their diagnosis. My first goal as a physician is to understand the science of my patients’ diagnoses and pass this information on in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Patients shouldn’t be lectured to, they should be students who learn about their diagnosis and feel comfortable and eager to ask questions.

“As a whole, I practice patient-centered care, fostering autonomy while being accessible for my patients’ questions and concerns, as well as guiding them. I feel proud when my patients say that I’m kind and that I was there in their time of need – and that they love my jokes!

“I’m honored to be a part of MedStar Health. My family has been cared for by specialists at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and have been a big part of supporting not only my family but my passion for medicine and infectious disease.”
