The MedStar Health Georgetown University (Baltimore) Fellowship Program in Gastroenterology
The MedStar Health Gastroenterology Fellowship Program in Baltimore is an ACGME-accredited three-year fellowship based at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center (MFSMC), with 2 fellows accepted per academic year for a total fellow complement of 6.
This new program expands MedStar Health’s gastroenterology training footprint into the Baltimore region, providing fellows with a comprehensive clinical experience across inpatient, outpatient, and procedural settings. Fellows train in a high-volume, diverse clinical environment designed to prepare them for careers in academic medicine, subspecialty practice, or community gastroenterology.
The program is structured to provide progressive responsibility, strong faculty mentorship, and broad exposure to complex gastrointestinal disease across the MedStar Baltimore hospital network.

Training locations
The primary training site is MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore is a vibrant city with a rich history and an exciting future for growth. Known as “Charm City,” it is the most populous city in Maryland and offers eclectic neighborhoods, a beautiful harbor front, historic venues with breathtaking architecture, and museums that appeal to all interests, along with an active and evolving art and food scene. The city has an unmistakable energy, from its waterfront and rowhouse-lined streets to its festivals, music, and local culture that make it both dynamic and welcoming. Baltimore is also proudly home to passionate sports culture, serving as the city for the NFL Baltimore Ravens and MLB Baltimore Orioles, adding to its strong sense of community and local pride.
The Center for Digestive Disease (CDD) at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center integrates outpatient gastroenterology clinics with a fully equipped endoscopy suite, allowing seamless transition between clinic-based care and procedural training.
Curriculum
Clinical fellows receive 36 months of clinical training with progressive responsibility throughout all three years. Fellows are expected to develop competence in core procedural and cognitive aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology.
Training includes:
- Inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology consult services
- Outpatient continuity and subspecialty clinics
- Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
- Elective rotations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Motility, Advanced Endoscopy, Bariatrics and GI Radiology/Pathology
- Dedicated block time for research and quality improvement projects
- Structured didactic schedule and multidisciplinary conference access with MedStar Baltimore system and collaborative virtual conferences with MedStar Georgetown University Fellowship program

Welcome to the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. We are excited to launch a training program dedicated to developing the next generation of outstanding gastroenterologists through excellence in clinical care, education, research, and mentorship.
Located in Baltimore, our fellows will train in a diverse and dynamic clinical environment, caring for patients with a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver diseases while learning from dedicated faculty committed to their success. Application Information
Thank you for your interest in the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program. This is a three-year training experience accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education that is designed to provide the basic educational and experiential elements necessary for the fellow to become a fully trained consultative gastroenterologist. The responsibilities are initially basic and are designed to give the trainee progressive responsibility with appropriate supervision to allow independent development of his/her skills.
The application process opens during the month of July for the Fellowship Program.
How to Apply through ERAS:
You must apply for the Fellowship Program at MedStar Health Georgetown University (Baltimore) through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). ERAS is an internet-based applications process developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges to transmit fellowship applications, letters of recommendation, Program Director letters, medical transcripts and other supporting credentials from applicants, residency programs and medical schools to fellowship program directors using the Internet. Upon receiving the applications through ERAS, a committee of program faculty from all three rotation sites review the applications. Interviews will be scheduled in the fall. Invitations to interview are sent via ERAS from our program coordinator.
MedStar Georgetown University (Baltimore) will host virtual interview dates in the fall where candidates are invited to meet a variety of faculty in a series of 20 minute interviews. The interview day also includes a program overview and informal meetings with current fellows.
The “Match”
Once you have applied to the Fellowship Program and accepted our invitation to interview with our faculty, fellows and staff, we hope you will choose to rank MedStar Georgetown University (Baltimore) at the top of your list of desirable training programs in Gastroenterology.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital participates in the National Resident Matching Program’s Medical Specialties Matching Program (MSMP) in Gastroenterology. This is a computerized venue for matching an applicant’s preferences for fellowship positions with program directors’ preferences for applicants. VISA POLICY: J1 visas are sponsored through MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. We currently do not have the ability to sponsor H1B visas.
Entering fellows must have completed an ACGME accredited three-year residency program in Internal Medicine in the United States or Canada.
