Sleeping Wellness for Cancer Survivors | MedStar Health
A young woman lays awake in bed.

A research study designed for young adult survivors

If you’ve been through cancer, you’ve already faced a lot. But for many survivors, sleep doesn’t simply go back to normal. Almost 50% of young adult cancer survivors experience insomnia, even years after treatment.

Trouble falling asleep. Waking up during the night. Feeling exhausted even after a full night in bed.

Poor sleep doesn’t just affect your nights. It can impact:

  • Energy levels
  • Focus and memory
  • Mood and overall quality of life

You’re not alone, and there may be a new way to help.

About the study

This research study is evaluating an innovative program designed to help young adult cancer survivors build healthier sleep patterns using evidence-based strategies.

This study explores a new way to deliver effective techniques for managing insomnia directly in the home—using smart speaker technology to make support more accessible, personalized, and easier to use.

Like many studies at MedStar Health, this work is focused on translating research into practical solutions that improve everyday care and quality of life.

The program combines:

  • Evidence-based sleep strategies
  • Smart technology that adapts to your habits
  • Personalized guidance to help you build healthier sleep patterns

How it works

We want to know if this smart speaker is effective at making people sleep better. By participating in this study, you will be helping us know more about if the intervention works.

If you join the study, you will:

  • Use the smart speaker at home for 6 weeks
  • Interact with a simple, voice-guided system that checks in with you daily
  • Receive personalized tips and adjustments
  • Provide feedback about your experience

The system may also:

  • Help you adjust your sleep schedule
  • Guide you in reducing nighttime screen use
  • Use lighting cues to support your body’s natural sleep rhythm

Participants who complete the study will be compensated for their time. Participation in clinical research is voluntary, and you may choose to withdraw at any time.

Eligibility: Who can participate

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 18–42 years old
  • Have a current or past cancer diagnosis
  • Are experiencing ongoing trouble with sleep
