Clinical Ethics Immersion | MedStar Washington Hospital Center | MedStar Health
In 2011, the Clinical Ethics Immersion (CEI) was established by the John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center located in Washington, DC. The CEI is one of the first experiential and clinical simulation-based programs in the country for professionals who seek to develop or advance their own ethics programming at their respective institutions. The CEI is a 3 day on-site intensive course for physicians, nurses, social workers, bioethicists, and those in other related disciplines interested in developing their policies, practices, and expertise in clinical ethics consultation.

The CEI helps participants better understand how clinicians, who must exercise sound, independent ethical judgment, work together with clinical bioethicists and ethics committees to continually improve the care of their hospitalized patients.

Participants will have the opportunity to round in intensive care units, respond to live requests for ethics consultation, participate in thoughtful discussion with guest speakers and Lynch Center faculty, attend an ethics committee meeting, develop effective communication and chart-writing skills, and participate in complex clinical ethics consultation simulations with professional actors at MedStar’s Simulation Training & Education Lab (SiTEL).

The CEI is held biannually in the spring and fall. Sessions are limited to 8 people.
