The MedStar Health—Washington Hospital Center Fellowship Program in Infectious Disease

MedStar Health - Georgetown University Partnership

We are integrating!

We are excited to share news of the integration of the Infectious Disease Fellowship programs at MedStar Georgetown & MedStar Washington Hospital Center. This academic integration reflects the growth and maturation of our GME platform and Academic Health System partnership. The name of the newly integrated program will embody this growth: The MedStar Health Georgetown University Program in Infectious Disease.

Dr. Gayle Balba will be the Program Director for the integrated fellowship. Dr. Saumil Doshi will continue to work closely with Dr. Balba as they partner together to lead the integration across sites. The current programs will remain in place for the 2025-2026 academic year in anticipation of the full launch of the integrated program format in July 2026.

The integrated program will allow for further enhancement of an already exceptional fellowship training experience by leveraging the full breadth and depth of teaching faculty, clinical experiences, and learning opportunities across the principal sites. We will be accepting applications this summer to the integrated program for the Fall 2025 Fellowship Match.

Clinical rotations will occur across the D.C. hospital sites. Fellow block schedules in the inaugural years will maintain flexibility to reflect the format of the legacy programs, while simultaneously providing an expanded palette of potential opportunities for fellows.

We are proud to celebrate the rich history and enduring impact of the individual fellowship training programs and their distinguished alumni as the two legacy programs join forces to become one.

Change brings opportunities and we remain excited for the future of ID education, research, and clinical training at MedStar Health & Georgetown University that remains bar none as a nationally recognized leader in the specialty!

The MedStar Washington Hospital Center Infectious Diseases program is a 2-year training program based in the largest and busiest hospital in our nation’s capital. We offer a tremendous clinical experience in a hospital that is a level I trauma center and home to the Heart and Vascular Institute. In addition to general ID consults, the fellows rotate on a service dedicated to transplant and device-associated infections.

Our fellows also spend one month caring for highly immunocompromised patients at the National Institutes for Health and two weeks of pediatric/adolescent infectious diseases experience at Children’s National Medical Center. Its outpatient continuity clinic affords experience taking care of a large cohort of HIV patients in addition to the variety of infections that are seen by practicing in a location such as Washington, D.C.
