About me
Olisa Ezegwu, MD, is a cardiologist specializing in advanced cardiac imaging at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, with certifications in adult echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT, and cardiovascular MRI.
Dr. Ezegwu provides comprehensive cardiovascular care for a broad range of conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and other structural and infiltrative heart diseases.
As a specialist in advanced cardiac imaging, he uses echocardiography, cardiac CT, coronary CT angiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac stress testing to better understand each patient’s heart health. He works closely with referring physicians and other specialists to combine imaging results with each patient’s symptoms and overall health, helping guide an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
Philosophy of Care
Dr. Ezegwu’s approach to care is patient-centered and collaborative. He works with patients to identify and modify cardiovascular risk factors and provides practical guidance on lifestyle changes that can improve long-term cardiovascular health.
When appropriate, he uses advanced cardiovascular imaging and other diagnostic testing to provide the information needed to guide care. He emphasizes patient advocacy and shared decision-making, taking the time to understand each patient’s concerns and ensure they are actively involved in decisions about their care.
Education & Training
Dr. Ezegwu earned his medical degree from the University of Lagos in Nigeria before completing an internal medicine residency at Cook County Health in Chicago, where he served as chief resident. He then completed his general cardiology fellowship at Cook County Health, serving as chief cardiology fellow. He subsequently completed an advanced cardiac imaging fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Ezegwu’s research interests include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, valvular heart disease, and artificial intelligence in cardiovascular imaging. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented his research at national and international cardiology conferences. His academic interests also include medical education and physician mentorship. He is an active member of the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
