The MedStar Health—Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center Fellowship program in sports medicine (Emergency Medicine)

MedStar Health - Georgetown University PartnershipMedStar Health, in conjunction with the Georgetown University School of Medicine, offers an ACGME-accredited, one-year Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship in Washington, DC. We match three fellows each year across two specialty tracks: two fellows on the Emergency Medicine track and one fellow on the PM&R track. The tracks share the same core primary care sports medicine clinics, the same selective and elective schedule, comprehensive didactics through the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium, and all program resources. They differ in their primary specialty continuity experience, and each fellow spends more core clinic time with faculty from their own specialty. In addition, each fellow is designated a primary collegiate sport pathway, pairing them with a major university contact sport for a full season, emphasizing graduated autonomy and direct involvement in athlete care.

Our vision is to be recognized as the nation’s leading primary care sports medicine fellowship, developing clinicians and educators who advance the field through service, leadership, and compassionate care. We aim to train world-class primary care sports medicine physicians with competency in general musculoskeletal medicine, sideline and team coverage, concussion management, and diagnostic and procedural ultrasound, guided by our program values of integrity, teamwork, growth, balance, and purpose.

Emergency Medicine track

The Emergency Medicine Track offers two fellows each year the opportunity to continue practicing their primary specialty independently as attending physicians in a community emergency department. EM Track fellows work a weekly emergency department shift at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney, Maryland. Their core primary care sports medicine clinic experience is anchored by faculty who trained in emergency medicine, with built-in time alongside faculty from PM&R, family medicine, and internal medicine.

PM&R track

The PM&R Track pairs one fellow each year with our physiatry-trained sports medicine faculty, whose practices carry an additional emphasis on interventional spine care. This gives the PM&R fellow dedicated exposure to fluoroscopically guided techniques, alongside the program’s core training in ultrasound-guided procedures and general sports medicine. The fellow maintains their primary specialty skills in a weekly general physiatry clinic at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.

Primary Collegiate Sport Pathways and Sideline Coverage

Each fellow is assigned a primary collegiate sport pathway through our partnerships with Georgetown University Athletics (NCAA Division I) and Gallaudet University Athletics (NCAA Division III). The pathways (Georgetown football, Gallaudet football, and Georgetown men’s lacrosse) pair each fellow with a major contact sport for a full season as the primary fellow and point of contact for that team. Pathway responsibilities include sideline coverage, in-season training room clinics (including fellow-run training rooms), and on-call medical direction for team athletic trainers, with schedules built to maximize training room time in season and opportunities to travel with the team. All three fellows cross-cover one another and share coverage of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse.

Numerous additional sideline and event medicine opportunities are available throughout the year through MedStar Sports Medicine partnerships, including Old Glory DC professional rugby, the Washington Mystics, high school football at The Potomac School, professional tennis, horse racing and jockey medicine, and endurance events including half marathon and marathon races. All three fellows also complete a rotation at the Park City ski clinic in Utah, managing on-mountain injuries including fractures and dislocations.

Didactics and Ultrasound

Didactics are organized through the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium, a collaboration of civilian and military sports medicine fellowships in the Washington, DC area that shares faculty and resources to create an unparalleled curriculum and experience. With more than ten co-fellows and mentorship from faculty across programs, didactics carry the camaraderie and built-in support of a residency class. The curriculum regularly features nationally recognized speakers and unique hands-on experiences, such as participating in an aqua therapy class, and includes wellness days throughout the year that pair participation in a sport with learning about its associated injuries (recent examples include rock climbing and archery).

The diagnostic ultrasound curriculum emphasizes regular hands-on scanning throughout the year. Fellows scan one another in small groups while faculty provide real-time feedback, and fellows are encouraged to hone their diagnostic skills every day in their core sports medicine clinics. Each fellow is also provided a handheld ultrasound to practice at home. Procedural ultrasound is taught in didactics, reinforced in clinic, and practiced in twice-yearly cadaver labs through the consortium curriculum.

Sample schedules

The fellowship year begins with four weeks of orientation followed by four 12-week quarters. The quarter-based schedule aligns each fellow’s clinic and training room time with their in-season primary sport; for example, the Georgetown football pathway fellow holds a Monday morning training room in the fall to evaluate athletes after weekend games. All three fellows share the same selective and elective schedule, with comparable time in orthopedic sports surgery, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, spine surgery, and hip surgery, plus elective time and dedicated board preparation.

History and Alumni

Our fellowship has been ACGME-accredited since 2013 and has maintained continued accreditation without citations throughout its history. In July 2026, we united MedStar Health’s two historical sports medicine fellowships, one sponsored by Emergency Medicine and one by PM&R, into a single program housed in the Department of Emergency Medicine with two specialty tracks. In doing so, we forged a new shared identity that retains the faculty, education, and legacy of both programs.

Alumni of the two programs have achieved considerable professional success across the country in academic medicine, private practice, and collegiate and professional sports coverage. Our graduates maintain a 100% pass rate on the sports medicine board certification (CAQ) examination. Alumni serve as team physicians in the NCAA, NBA, NHL, and NFL, with professional rugby, USA national teams, and professional ballet and dance companies; several also serve as airway physicians for NFL and NHL teams.
