Our PGY2 Infectious Diseases (ID) Pharmacy Residency offers a unique multi-hospital training experience with exposure to community and academic medical centers, robust antimicrobial stewardship programs, and advanced ID consult services.

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases residency prepares pharmacists for advanced clinical practice in ID, focusing on antimicrobial stewardship, interdisciplinary ID consult services, microbiology, and system-level leadership. The resident will train across MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC), MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), MedStar Montgomery Medical Center (MMMC), MedStar Union Memorial Hospital (MUMH), MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center (MSMHC), and MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center (MFSMC).

Program Goals

Completion of the MedStar Health PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program prepares graduates to become independent infectious diseases clinical specialists and antimicrobial stewardship leaders capable of advancing patient care across diverse healthcare settings.

Residents will develop:

• Advanced clinical expertise in the management of complex infectious diseases across multiple practice settings
• Expertise in antimicrobial stewardship principles, implementation, quality improvement, and health-system program development
• Advanced competency in pharmacokinetic consultation, antimicrobial optimization, diagnostic stewardship, and evidence-based therapeutic decision making
• Experience collaborating within interdisciplinary healthcare teams to improve patient outcomes and antimicrobial utilization
• Proficiency in teaching, precepting, and delivering high-quality educational programs to pharmacists, physicians, learners, and other healthcare professionals
•  Strong research, medication-use evaluation, and scholarly writing skills through completion of original research and quality improvement initiatives
• Leadership skills necessary to develop clinical services, implement system-wide initiatives, and influence antimicrobial stewardship practice
• Preparation for successful attainment of board certification, academic appointments, leadership positions, or advanced infectious diseases pharmacy practice
