Choose Your Benefits for 2019

Annual Enrollment is underway and myHR is your one-stop for all the information you need to choose the right benefits plan for 2019. Before enrolling, take time to visit myHR to compare plans and explore all of the options available to you. Take time to review your enrollment packet and determine the right options for you and your family.

The 2020 Annual Enrollment period (Oct. 29-Nov. 18) is your opportunity to review and make changes to your benefits plan for the upcoming year. You must enroll online through myHR from StarPort (see HR Information section) or myHRMedStar.net to make changes to your benefits coverage and enroll in Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). If you wish to keep your current benefits for 2020 (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, additional coverage, legal resources, and other voluntary benefits), you do not need to enroll online. Your 2019 benefits elections and dependents will roll over to 2020, except for FSA.

Your benefits options encompass much more than your healthcare coverage. With voluntary benefits, you can purchase more coverage to ensure you and your family are protected—no matter what life throws your way.

Voluntary benefits provide additional value to your MedStar Total Rewards package, giving you more choices to tailor your benefits plan to best fit your needs.

The voluntary benefits for 2020 Annual Enrollment include:

  • Universal Life Insurance: Provides permanent death benefits, including a long-term care rider
  • Critical Illness Insurance: Offers affordable, flexible coverage for a variety of serious illnesses
  • Accident Insurance: Assists you financially in the event of an injury
  • Legal Resources: Comprehensive coverage for a wide range of legal services for an affordable monthly rate, with no copays and yearly usage limitations
  • Pet Insurance: Medical coverage for dogs and cats of all ages and breeds, provided by PetFirst; MedStar associates receive a 10% discount on all plans

Voluntary benefits coverage is available at discounted group rates, meaning you pay a lower monthly rate. Learn more and enroll online at myHR from StarPort (see HR Information section) or myHRMedStar.net from any computer or mobile device.

New for 2019

  • Higher copay for emergency care. The copay for emergency care is increasing from $125 to $250 for both the MedStar Select and CareFirst medical plans. Like health systems nationwide, MedStar is experiencing increased costs for its associate medical plans, including emergency care services. MedStar’s change aligns with several federal, state and private insurance plans that have increased emergency care visit copays to encourage choosing another option for non-emergent care. Across the U.S., there are 128 million Emergency Department (ED) visits each year, with 63 percent for non-life threatening emergencies.Emergency Departments should be used only for true medical emergencies; it can be the most expensive option if associates don’t have a true emergency. Before they receive care, associates should consider all of their options. MedStar Health Urgent Care provides non-emergent care while saving associates time and money. Additionally, MedStar eVisit is a convenient, less costly option for minor illnesses and injuries, and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Emergency Departments should only be used for emergency care.
  • MedStar Now for primary and urgent care: MedStar Now is a convenient option for helping you determine the appropriate care if you experience an illness or injury, or need a vaccine, medical test or screening. The online tool—MedStarNow.org—guides you to the right care based on your symptoms and MedStar services near you, including urgent care, primary care, Emergency Department, and MedStar eVisit. Based on responses from a brief questionnaire, MedStar Now directs you to the care you need, when and where you need it.

Launching the HR Solution Center to Help Our Associates

As MedStar Health Research Institute continues to grow, and the needs of our associates change, we are continuing to expand how we support our associates through the human resources team. As part of building a unified system, in 2017 MedStar Health joined all human resources associates as one team for the system. This unification allows the Research Institute access to system-wide tools and resources to best benefit our associates. As we grow, we are continuing our progress towards transitioning HR from a traditional transactional function to a strategic business partner, focused on business advisory support while enhancing the efficiency of HR-related activities.

As part of these system-wide tools, the myHR portal was introduced earlier this year as a one-stop resource for associates and leaders. As myHR continues to grow, we are pleased to announce a new resource for our associates beginning on July 2: the HR Solution Center.

Accessible by phone or online, the HR Solution Center will provide associates with efficient solutions to their request and questions on the following topics:

  • Pay and Compensation
Verifications outside The Work #, PTO balances/donations, W-2 duplicates, D.C. wage notifications and MHRI timesheet notifications, direct deposit, tax updates and address changes
  • Benefits
Password reset, enrollment assistance, benefit plan information location, associate discounts
  • myHR Portal
Assistance with access and navigation/information location
  • Talent Manager
System navigation, password reset, monitors and sends reminders for initial performance review completion and annual review completion

You can contact the HR Solution Center at 1-855-MSH-MyHR or [email protected].

In addition to the HR Solution Center, the Research Institute continues to be supported by our team of HR professionals: Haley Call, HR Generalist; Latiesha Omonijo, HR Business Partner; Susanne Selzer, Talent Acquisition; and Melissa (Mel) Goodrich, Corporate Director of Human Resources. If you have any questions, please contact the MHRI HR team.

New for 2018: MyHR Portal Launching January 15

At MedStar Health, we recognize that our success is only possible through the hard work and dedication of our associates. We value and appreciate your contributions, and take great pride in offering a comprehensive benefits package—MedStar Total Rewards—that helps you grow personally and professionally, recognizes and rewards your hard work, and helps you plan for your future.

Keeping up with all that MedStar Total Rewards offers will now be easier with myHR, a new online tool that brings together benefits and other Human Resources (HR) information in one convenient location. This new portal launches on January 15.

Available anytime, anywhere, the HR portal simplifies, organizes and serves as a primary resource for all of your HR needs. Many months of research, testing, and associate feedback went into the creation of myHR, and the result is a powerful website that offers an enhanced self-service experience for finding information.

myHR is designed with you in mind and offers many features, including:

  • One-stop for HR information—benefits, pay, savings, managing life events, career development, and other topics of interest
  • Personalized experience—reminders, announcements, and information are tailored to you based on your employer, role, work location, and benefit eligibility
  • Secure in- and out-of-network access—available 24/7 from any computer or mobile device
  • MedStar Total Rewards Summary—personalized overview of your MedStar Total Rewards package, including compensation, benefits, retirement savings, and other benefit programs in which you participate. Historically, associates received their MedStar Total Rewards Summary in hard copy at their homes. Associate Survey feedback indicated the MedStar Total Rewards Summary—showcasing a complete picture of MedStar’s total investment in each associate—as an invaluable resource. For the first time, the MedStar Total Rewards Summary is now online, as part of myHR.

Explore myHR: Simple. Convenient. All in One Place

When you log into myHR, you have a wealth of information available at your fingertips. For example, you can view benefit plan options, navigate important steps when life events occur, explore associate discounts, and access HR sites such as ePayStubs, Fidelity, The Work Number, and Talent Manager. All of these and more HR resources are accessible quickly, with only a few clicks.

Associates can access myHR in two ways:

  • Within MedStar network—visit StarPort home page and select myHR link under HR Information section; using the StarPort link is single sign-on to myHR.
  • Outside MedStar network—visit myHRMedStar.net from any device. A one-time new user registration is necessary the first time you visit www.myHRMedStar.net. This step allows associates to create a password for accessing myHR anytime from any device.

Explore myHR and discover the many perks of your MedStar Total Rewards.

Be sure to check out the new portal on January 15!
