Family and Preventive Medicine Residency Program | Baltimore | MedStar Health

The MedStar Health—Franklin Square Residency Program in Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine

The Combined Family Medicine-Preventive Medicine Residency is a four-year residency program leading to board certification in both family medicine and general preventive medicine. The program is a collaboration between MedStar Franklin Square Family Medicine Residency and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) General Preventive Medicine Residency. The goal of the program is to train leaders in family medicine and public health to improve health through partnership, discovery, and advocacy.

The program includes opportunities to:

  • Practice full-scope family medicine

  • Participate in general preventive medicine (GPM) training that includes coursework to receive a Master in Public Health (MPH) degree

  • Synthesize clinical and population-based approaches to disease prevention and health promotion

  • View health issues on a broad continuum from local to international in perspective

  • Discover and apply knowledge toward the protection of the public's health

  • Acquire the management and epidemiologic skills needed to address the overall health needs of underserved populations

  • Develop the clinical skills needed to treat specific diseases that disproportionately affect underserved populations

Residents in this program complete the requirements of the MedStar Health-Franklin Square Family Medicine Residency Program and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health General Preventive Medicine Residency Program.

Curriculum

Combined program residents meet preventive medicine competencies through eight GPM practicum block rotations affiliated with JHSPH, and the remainder longitudinally on family medicine rotations including family health center, emergency department, musculoskeletal, and geriatrics. Residents choose from established rotation sites and may work with the program director and program manager to set up new elective rotations.

Electives for medical students

Medical students from LCME-accredited schools may apply for a one-month fall or spring elective in preventive medicine.
