The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Residency Program in Pathology
Our program is a four-year categorical program with a broad depth of educational opportunities within the MedStar Health system and at our affiliate sites.
Residents complete both Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP) rotations each year of training, and experience diverse and comprehensive case materials.
Anatomic services include general surgical pathology, cytopathology, renal and transplant pathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, and the post mortem examination. Clinical services include transfusion medicine, microbiology, hematopathology, molecular diagnostics, and general clinical chemistry. Patient care values include reliability, professionalism, and respect.
Why train here
Academic Excellence
We strive to train pathologists who are competent in all aspects of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The trained pathologist from MedStar Georgetown should capably perform the duties of his or her specialty in any clinical or academic setting to the best of their ability with professionalism and integrity.
In addition, graduates will apply fundamental managerial principles in the operation of a laboratory and use their background in evidence-based medicine and research techniques to make decisions regarding new data and testing procedures for better patient care.
The anatomic and clinical pathology program is categorical with a broad depth of educational opportunities within the MedStar Health system and at our affiliate sites. Residents complete both AP and CP rotations each year of training and experience diverse and comprehensive case materials.
Graduates will use their anatomic skills to make accurate diagnoses, communicate with their fellow clinicians, have the ability to recognize their personal limitations, and seek proper consultation when necessary.
We hope to not only instruct our residents at the highest level, but also to encourage and inspire enthusiasm for a successful career in pathology.

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in our Pathology Residency Program!
As a proud alumnus and now Program Director, it is both an honor and a joy to guide the next generation of pathologists at the very institution that helped shape my own career. Our integrated Anatomic and Clinical Pathology curriculum offers a dynamic blend of high-volume cases and complex subspecialty exposure across six diverse training sites.
Our program has a rich history of producing compassionate, skilled pathologists who are prepared to lead in all practice settings. Residents benefit from a supportive, collegial environment, enriched by the cultural vibrancy of Washington, D.C., and the exciting advances at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital—including our new, state-of-the-art Verstandig Pavilion.
We are proud to offer rigorous training, strong mentorship, and a close-knit community dedicated to service, learning, and excellence in patient care.
Sincerely,
Roshanak Derakhshandeh, MD

Welcome from our chief residents
We're Greg and Yoshi, the Chief Residents in Pathology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Thank you for considering our program! The first thing you'll notice about Georgetown is the people. The residents here genuinely look out for each other. Whether it's helping someone work through a tough case, covering when life happens, or just grabbing lunch together between sign-outs, there's a sense of camaraderie in this program that we don't take for granted. You'll spend four years with these people, and that relationship matters as much as anything else in your training.
The surgical pathology service is busy, and you're given real responsibility early. Rotations through anatomic and clinical pathology are well structured, and the program gives you room to explore what direction you want to take in your career.
Outside of the hospital, D.C. is a great city to live in! The food scene is one of the best on the East Coast, with everything from hole-in-the-wall spots to newer restaurants worth checking out. There are good hiking and outdoor access within a short drive, and the city always has something going on, whether it's live music, comedy, or a show at the Kennedy Center. The Metro makes it easy to get around without needing a car, which is a nice change from a lot of other cities. It's an easy place to have a life outside of residency, which makes a bigger difference than you'd expect!
If you have questions before interviews or applications, don't hesitate to reach out!
