Our program offers three categorical and six preliminary positions each academic year. The program utilizes the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and all applicants MUST apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Our application deadline is December 1 each year, and we have four interview dates during December and January. All interviews this year (2020-21) will be virtual. We will have an online reception the evening prior where applicants will be able to get to know our faculty and residents in a more casual setting.
To be considered for a position in our General Surgery Residency Program, a complete application must be submitted to ERAS. Applicants are encouraged to submit their full application early as interview dates fill up quickly. All applications are reviewed by the Surgery Residency Committee, which includes, but is not limited to, the program director, associate program directors, and surgery faculty members.
Applications are complete when the program has received the following documents:
- Common Application Form (CAF)
- Curriculum vitae
- Personal statement
- Medical school transcript
- Dean's letter
- Three letters of recommendation (one letter of recommendation should be from the chairman of the Department of Surgery at the applicant's medical school; two additional letters of recommendation can be from faculty or colleagues)
- Photo
- United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) transcripts (applicants must have passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the examination in order to be eligible for entry into our program)
Our review committee takes a holistic approach to reviewing the applications. There is no minimum required score.

Foreign medical graduates
We sponsor only J1 visas for graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada. Applicants must hold a current and valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and must be no more than two years out of medical school. Unfortunately, we cannot offer an interview unless you meet all these qualifications.
In addition, our residency program accepts preliminary applicants that have designated PGY-2 positions in specialty programs for the following academic year.
