Neurosurgery Residency Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

Letter from the Chairman and Program Director

It is a pleasure to introduce you to the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Department of Neurosurgery and our residency training program. The educational goal of the faculty is to train leaders in the field of neurosurgery in the spirit of cura personalis, the guiding principle of Georgetown University Hospital. Cura personalis, which translates from Latin as the care of the whole person, applies to the care of our patients and to the education of our residents. It suggests “individualized attention to the needs of others, distinct respect for his or her unique circumstances and concerns, and an appropriate appreciation for his or her particular gifts and insights.”

To this end, the faculty’s expertise and specialization covers the entire breadth and depth of neurosurgery. Trainees also benefit from close affiliations, including combination surgeries and joint conferences, with orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, interventional neuroradiology, and radiation oncology. Broad training is further achieved by our diverse training sites, including the Level 1 Trauma Center, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and Children’s National Medical Center.

Without question, neurosurgery residency is an intense seven-year experience that is physically and mentally challenging. It has to be to produce neurosurgeons who can truly care for patients in the spirit of cura personalis. We pride ourselves on being collegial, close-knit and focused on providing both exceptional patient care and outstanding resident education.
