Letter from the Director—The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Residency Program in Radiation Oncology

Sonali Rudra
Andrew Satinsky

In line with the mission of Georgetown University, the goal of our residency program is to educate and train physicians to be skillful in the practice of radiation oncology, and to be caring and compassionate in the treatment of cancer patients. Our residency program was established in 1982 and we are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for 6 residents. We strongly value resident wellness and provide residents with individualized learning and research opportunities to meet their long-term career goals.

The program includes a wide range of diverse clinical experiences in a variety of practice settings across the Washington, D.C., area. Residents will gain skills in the latest technology in the treatment of cancer, including proton therapy and other advanced modalities. Residents will spend much of their training at our main site at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital located on the campus of Georgetown University. Two integrated sites at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and at MedStar Southern Maryland offer experiences in a diverse community practice environment. Residents will also participate in a continuity clinic, allowing for a longitudinal relationship with patients.

Our program emphasizes the importance of independent research and provides residents many opportunities to engage in meaningful research activities.  We are a member of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Washington, D.C.,’s only National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.  Residents have the unique opportunity to devote up to 12 months of their training to either laboratory or clinical research in their fields of interest. Prior residents have dedicated this time to projects in radiobiology, radiation physics, drug development and population health. Residents have also been involved in the clinical protocols developed in our department.

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and we accept one or two residents a year to maintain a total number of six residents in our program. Residency will begin at Georgetown with the PGY-2 year after the completion of a transitional or preliminary intern year. For details on applying for our residency program, please refer to the Application and Admission section.
