About me
John T. Cardella, MD, is an Associate Professor of Radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the Program Director of the Interventional Radiology Residency. Dr. Cardella specializes in a broad range of complex interventional procedures, with particular expertise in venous disease and reconstruction, advanced IVC filter removal, prostate artery embolization, and uterine artery embolization. He is especially interested in minimally invasive approaches that can provide effective treatment while avoiding or reducing the need for traditional surgery. He works closely with each patient to understand their goals, explain the available options, and develop a treatment plan tailored to their individual needs.
For Dr. Cardella, technical expertise is only one part of exceptional care. He believes patients should leave every visit with a clear understanding of their condition, their treatment options, and what to expect. He takes the time to listen, answer questions, and ensure that patients feel informed and comfortable with their decisions. His goal is to pair the sophistication of modern interventional radiology with a personal approach to medicine.
As an academic physician, Dr. Cardella is deeply committed to advancing the field and educating future generations of interventional radiologists. In addition to serving as Program Director of the Interventional Radiology Residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, he serves as an examiner for the Interventional Radiology board examinations and as Program Chair for the Society of Interventional Radiology’s IR Resident Practicum, a national educational course for interventional radiology residents. Through these roles, he contributes to the education, assessment, and development of the next generation of interventional radiologists.
Dr. Cardella earned his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He subsequently completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the University of North Carolina, serving as Chief Resident, followed by fellowship training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Virginia.
