Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship

Musculoskeletal oncology is a sub-specialty of orthopaedic surgery focused on the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors and other unusual lesions of both the pediatric and adult musculoskeletal system. The Department of Musculoskeletal Oncology (Orthopaedic Oncology) at Washington Cancer Institute is one of the leading premier sarcoma programs in the country. Affiliated with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the program also serves patients at Children’s National Medical Center and the National Cancer Center.

Originally established at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in 1986 by Dr. Martin Malawer, a pioneer in the field of Orthopaedic Oncology, the program and the fellowship has continued to grow and expand under the direction of Dr. Robert M. Henshaw, a fellowship trained and board certified Orthopaedic oncologist who has been involved with the program since 1995. Dr. Henshaw, a MIT trained mechanical engineer, is Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery (Orthopedic Oncology) at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and director of the combined program in Orthopaedic Oncology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center and the Children’s National Medical Center.

Dr. Brock Adams, a fellowship trained and board certified orthopaedic oncologist, recently joined the practice in 2013. In addition to musculoskeletal oncology, Dr. Adams provides care in select reconstructive and orthopaedic trauma cases. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

The fellowship training program is an ACGME certified and funded 1 year program with a 2nd optional year available to interested fellows seeking further training opportunities in research and clinical work. Graduates of the program have the skills and training needed for an academic career in orthopaedic oncology, with many founding new departments at tertiary and regional medical centers in the US and abroad.
