Application Information—The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Residency Program in Orthopaedic Surgery

Historic stone building on the campus of Georgetown University, Washington DC

Application and match information

The MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) program participates in the National Residency Matching Program, and we are seeking to fill four positions in the match. All applications will be reviewed by our Residency Application Review Committee, and interviews will be offered to qualified candidates. We will continue to hold virtual interviews for the 2023-2024 season.

Preference Signaling

The signaling program is voluntary. Both applicants and programs opt-in to Preference Signaling as part of the AAMC ERAS participation agreement, and MGUH has opted in for this program. A couple of reminders:

  • Each applicant will be allotted 30 signals

  • Applicants should signal their home programs as well as programs where they may have completed a sub-internship, if those programs are among their preferred programs.

  • Applicants with no geographic preference should indicate “no geographic preference” in lieu of leaving that field blank.

Residency application guidelines

Applications must be complete and submitted by October 12th.

Candidates must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The following documents are needed in order to have your application reviewed:

  • ERAS common application form
  • USMLE Step 1 transcript (pass/fail); Step 2 CK and CS when available

  • Osteopathic applicants: your COMLEX scores will be accepted and reviewed, but USMLE CK scores are still required. Either USMLE Step II CS or COMLEX Clinical Skills exam are acceptable.

  • Medical school transcript

  • Personal statement

  • Dean's Letter (the Selection Committee is aware that this will not be available by 10/12)

  • 2-3 letters of recommendation, including one departmental support letter from your home institution; additional letters are welcome.

  • Preference signal (if applicable)

Neither application review nor invitation for a formal interview will be made unless the application is complete.

Interviews are granted by invitation only. If selected for an interview you will be notified via the ERAS post office, and interviews will be scheduled via the Interview Broker platform.

Visa Policy

Only J1 visas are sponsored through MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Interviews

We will continue to hold virtual interviews for the 2023-2024 season, and applications will be reviewed beginning October 12th.

AOA’s Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) recommends all CORD member programs participate in the Universal Interview Offer Day for the 2023-2024 Orthopaedic Residency Match process. Virtual interview invitations will be offered on Monday, November 13th, after 12:00pm EST. If an applicant declines/does not respond by Thursday, November 16th, 12:00pm EST, the program may extend an invitation to another applicant.

If selected for an interview you will be notified via the ERAS post office, and interviews will be scheduled via the Interview Broker platform.

Virtual interviews will be held on the following dates:

  • Friday, 1/5: 11:30am to 5:30pm EST

  • Saturday, 1/6: 7:30am to 1:30pm EST

Each candidate will be interviewed virtually by various members of our faculty, including Dr. Kessler, Program Director, and Dr. Khanna, Chair of the department. In addition, there will be 2 resident rooms, which are used as an informal time to chat with our current residents about the program and life in D.C..
