Lymphedema Rehabilitation | MedStar Health

If you are experiencing lymphedema (swelling) in your arms and legs following cancer surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, our rehabilitation team can help. Physical and/or occupational therapy may be recommended by your physician as part of your lymphedema management plan.

We offer rehabilitation services for patients with:

  • Muscle imbalances that may have resulted from surgery
  • Decreased activity levels

When lymphedema presents, the patient is offered a comprehensive approach to restore maximum level of function. Treatment may include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage and therapy
  • Gradient compression bandaging of the limb
  • A comprehensive exercise prescription for flexibility, strength, and edema management
  • Posture and breathing exercises
  • Aerobic and conditioning exercises
  • Sequential compression pump, if indicated
