Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer

Maureen-McCauslandMaureen P. McCausland, DNSc, RN, FAAN, is senior vice president and chief nursing officer for MedStar Health. In this role, she serves as senior nursing administrator and is responsible for systemwide oversight and leadership of professional nursing practice, standards of nursing care, nursing outcomes, nursing education, and nursing research. In collaboration with MedStar's nursing leadership and professional nurses, McCausland continues to enhance a system approach to a professional practice model that emphasizes the sanctity of the nurse/patient relationship, deep mutual respect among professional colleagues and the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based care.

McCausland joined MedStar in 2010 from the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where she served as senior vice president, Patient Care Services, and chief nursing officer. Prior to her role at the University of Wisconsin, she served as chief nursing executive at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and associate dean for Nursing Practice at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

McCausland holds more than 30 years of experience as a hospital and nursing executive with a demonstrated track record of developing successful, patient-oriented programs. Additionally, she has an extensive strategic and operational background in complex academic medical centers and integrated delivery systems, as well as implementation of electronic health records.

Beginning her career with the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals, McCausland held several director positions in nursing. Over a brief time, she progressed in her career, and was appointed to a number of leadership positions that included vice president for Nursing for Hanna Pavilion at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, associate vice president for Nursing at The Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and vice president for Nursing at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Additionally, McCausland is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, was a Johnson & Johnson Wharton fellow and a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Boston University and received her master's and undergraduate degrees in nursing from Boston College.

She currently is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nursing and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
