Bariatric Surgery: Successes
 
As Tyrone Harrison (pictured above) gained weight, his diabetes spiraled out of control and he was afraid he might lose a leg or go blind. Obesity comes with health risks—diabetes, high cholesterol, joint pain and sleep apnea. Tyrone turned to the Bariatric Surgery Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He lost 102 pounds in six months, as well as his diabetes.

Thomas Cook, 50, is among the longest-surviving heart transplant patients on record. Twenty-five years ago, a donor heart was transplanted into his chest, and it was one of the earliest heart transplants performed at the Hospital Center. The heart turned out to be a perfect match and Cook is thriving.
