Washington, DC, July 10, 2014 — Joan Bardsley, MBA, RN, assistant vice president at MedStar Health Research Institute was named 2014 president of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
On Aug 5-9, Bardsley attended the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) conference in August to where educators gathered to see how the latest findings are translated into on-the-ground clinical practice. AADE anticipated an attendance of over 3,000 diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals. This year’s conference advertised new session formats to encourage more interactive learning, including 90-minute Snap Learning sessions (focused on specific issues), Critical Conversations (cased-based learning in small groups), Meet-the-Experts Debates, and master classes (advanced level sessions).
Bardsley is the administrative lead for the Research Institute’s core scientific services, which include the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), the Penn Medical Laboratory, the Pre-Clinical Laboratory and the Research Pharmacy. Her responsibilities for these areas include strategic visioning, budgeting and financial performance, and business development monitoring and tracking. In this position, Bardsley serves on the executive committee for the Research Institute.
A registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, Bardsley has been a co-investigator for diabetes management research through the clinical research center and develops and implements comprehensive training activities for the organizations clinical research coordinators throughout the MedStar Health system. Also within the system, Bardsley serves as a representative to MedStar's Chief Nursing Council and Nursing Research Consortium.
A member of the MedStar Health Research Institute leadership team since 1993, Bardsley received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, a Masters of Arts and her Masters of Business Administration from George Washington University in Washington, DC.
